The Humble Beginnings of Jesus

It’s laughable that the Savior of the world was born in a manger in a shabby little town called Bethlehem. It wasn’t pretty, and I think there’s a lesson there: It doesn’t matter where you’re from, what happened in the past, or what you look like. Completely revolutionary.

It doesn’t matter who you are either! Mary and Joseph were the unlikely parents to the Savior of the world. Poor, teenagers! They couldn’t even afford a crib! Can you imagine?! But another strong statement God made with that – it doesn’t matter who you are, rich or poor, young or old, large or small – Jesus came for each one of us.

I used to think that the fact that Jesus was born in a stable was an accident. It just happened to be that the inn was full. Maybe Mary’s labor progressed faster because she walked for 90 miles. I never considered that it was exactly part of God’s plan.

Sometimes we have less than perfect circumstances. Surely if God has a plan for our lives, he would have given us more money, more influence; he would have made us thinner or prettier. But that’s just not the way God works. He takes unlikely circumstances and appearances and uses us anyway.

The Savior’s entrance into the world was the first statement God made about physical appearances - it doesn’t matter for His work to be done. This gives us complete freedom to worry less about hair, makeup, clothes and our body so that we can focus on being His hands and feet.
